李雁南目瞪口呆，他首先是惊叹于软件工程师的逻辑思维能力，有论点，有论证，有例子，有反证，一环扣一环，无懈可击，一气呵成。其次，这个傻乎乎的匠人居然还有些朴素的人文主义观念。李雁南赞叹着说：“My God！ I met a priest today！”（“主啊！今天我遇到牧师了！”）
罗伯特严肃地说：“I’m Robert； not a priest！”（“我是罗伯特，我不是牧师！”）
李雁南笑着说：“Cheers for your wonderful preaching！”（“为你精彩的布道干杯！”）
罗伯特端起酒杯申明：“It’s not a prayer； it’s the truth！”（“这不是布道而是事实！”）
两人干杯，李雁南觉得罗伯特的形象鲜活起来，至少傻得可爱，挺好玩的。孙小纯上来给酒杯添满，又在旁边纳闷地看着两人争吵，给李雁南添酒的时候，劝了一句：“大哥，您们别吵了！”
李雁南脱口而出地打趣道：“我们正在说你呢！”
孙小纯脸红了：“说我？我有啥好说的哇？”
李雁南叫住她：“咦——小妹，你是哪儿的哟？”
孙小纯疑惑地看着李雁南：“四川。”
李雁南惊奇地用四川话说：“吔——老乡吔！”
孙小纯惊喜地问：“真的哇？”
李雁南说：“你刚才那个‘哇’，一听就是四川的。你姓啥？”
孙小纯也很惊喜：“我姓孙，大哥姓啥？”
李雁南说：“李。你来多久了？”
孙小纯说：“刚来，大哥你呢？”
李雁南说：“抗战8年了。”
罗伯特紧张而疑惑地看着他们。
李雁南对孙小纯介绍罗伯特：“我的学生，我教他说中国话。”
孙小纯笑：“哦。”
李雁南对罗伯特说：“Never mind！ We’re from the same province。”（“放心！我们是老乡！”）
罗伯特也兴奋地说：“Really。 It’s great！”（“是吗？太好了！”）
孙小纯说：“你们慢慢用。”
李雁南说：“等会留个电话，有时间到大哥家玩。”
孙小纯高兴地“哎”了一声就转身离开了。
两人的争论从大厅移到了厕所，在“俏佳人”酒楼洗手间内，两人一边小便一边继续。
李雁南很歉意地对罗伯特说：“Robert； I have to admit that I underestimated you。 But I’m just misunderstanding you； not looking down upon you or trying to insult you。 I’m sorry for that。 I agree with what you’re saying； at least in theory it sounds very logical and persuasive。”（“罗伯特，我不得不承认，我的确低估了你，但我没有瞧不起你或侮辱你，仅仅是个误解。我表示歉意。我承认，你的说法，至少在理论上，逻辑严密，很有说服力。”）
罗伯特说：“It’s true！”（“这是事实！”）
李雁南说：“Strictly speaking I underestimated human nature as a whole。 You know a genuine cynic is a total pessimist。 I believe in nothing except for my eyes and instinct。”（“严格地讲，我总体上低估了人性。你知道一个地道的犬儒主义者是一个不可救药的悲观主义者。除了我的眼睛和直觉，我什么也不相信。”）
罗伯特盯着李雁南的眼睛说：“You should trust me！”（“你应该信任我！”）
